The Chicago Korean American Artists Association (CKAAA) was founded 1981 in Chicago by a group of first generation Korean artists who sought to create a forum for artistic expression. The mission of the Association is to provide an artistic outlet and professional development for Korean-American artists by exposing their work to local Korean immigrants and the greater Illinois community with organized fine arts exhibitions. This show consists of Western style and Korean traditional paintings, ceramics, video, fiber, mixed media and installations produced by 33 Chicago area artists. Some works on display will be available for sale. The exhibition was named “Sprouting” to symbolize the energy spent by young sprouts to emerge from cold soil in spring. In the same way, people suffering from the current Great Recession manage to adapt to harsh economic reality. The survival instinct is strong; we use artistic expression to overcome challenging environments and thrive.

The Chicago Korean American Artists Association (CKAAA), founded in 1981, has consistently and successfully organized annual and semi-annual fine arts exhibitions since its foundation, holding our 34th anniversary show in 2009. The association was founded by a group of Korean artists that had immigrated to the United States and sought to create a forum for artistic expression in their new country. When the CKAAA was founded in 1981, there were very few resources to assist Korean immigrants. These immigrants worked very long hours, often doing menial and hard physical labor, in an effort to make a better life for their children. Between the struggle to survive economically and to adapt to the language and culture of their new home, their own personal dreams and interests often were often sacrificed. When the CKAAA began organizing fine arts exhibitions in the community, many Korean Americans were shocked by the idea that their fellow immigrants could have the time to pursue fine art, which they saw as a valuable, but secondary activity. The artists of CKAAA became role models for the larger Korean American community, showing that it was possible to both survive and thrive in the U.S., that immigrants did not have to give up their hopes and dreams, and that they could strive towards personal goals in addition to working hard for their families. Korean American immigrants come to this country to stay, with the understanding that they will live the rest of their lives here, that this is their new country and the home country of their children. As a result, there can be sadness, longing and homesickness for the Korean culture and language they grew up with. Our shows have brought hope, possibility, comfort, healing and inspiration to struggling people. In addition, our work educates second and third generation Korean Americans on the richness of their culture and history, instilling pride in themselves and their families. Because of the traditions and cultural values they are raised with, Korean people are shy to express their opinions, express their feelings, vote, promote themselves and their culture, or otherwise draw attention to themselves, since Korean culture stresses humility. We at CKAAA can help lead the Korean American community to learn new ways to become more involved with the larger American culture. Many different kinds of artists make up the membership of CKAAA. We are painters, printmakers, sculptors, ceramic artists, fiber artists, installation artists, Korean traditional artists, designers, fashion designers, photographers and video artists. As an association of fine artists and mentors, we challenge ourselves to improve the quality of our own artwork as well as educating the next generation of artists and furthering our involvement both in the Korean community and the larger community of Illinois. We work to open doors to younger Asian-American artists and continually seek new ways to combine Korean traditional art forms with our new experiences in America. Though CKAAA has been in existence for many years, we have never applied for grants until now. In part this was because we felt a great obligation to take care of ourselves and meet our own needs as an organization and not seek help from outside the community. In addition, we felt afraid to apply, afraid of the system, full of doubts about our qualifications. Nowadays, we have more faith in our ability to provide service to the Korean American community and the larger American society and feel more deserving of institutional support. We feel pride in the way we have presented Korean American culture through the fine arts these many years and of the impact we have on the community. CKAAA plays a vital role in portraying both the similarities and the differences between immigrant communities and the larger American society and to show that differences are not negative. On the contrary, differences are to be embraced and appreciated, for they are what make our society so energetic, vibrant and fascinating.
