Praised for their "joy of sheer technical ability, unanimity of phrasing and beautiful blended tone" the Lincoln Trio has become Chicago’s most celebrated chamber ensemble. The Lincoln Trio - Desirée Ruhstrat, violin, David Cunliffe, cello and Marta Aznavoorian, piano - takes its name from their home, the heartland of the United States, the land of Lincoln. The Trio's polished presentations of well-known chamber works and their ability to forge new paths with contemporary repertoire has led to the group's reputation as a first rate ensemble, drawing an eclectic audience of sophisticated music lovers, young admirers of contemporary programs, and students discovering chamber music for the first time.
Bringing together performing experience spanning the globe, each member is an artist of international renown. Violinist Desirée Ruhstrat has performed throughout the US and Europe, appearing at the White House and performing on live radio broadcast heard around the world with the Berlin Radio Orchestra; cellist David Cunliffe has performed with the BBC and Royal Scottish orchestras as well as touring ad as a member of the Balanescu Quartet; pianist Marta Aznavoorian has appeared with the Chicago Symphony and has performed at the Kennedy Center and the Sydney Opera House.
Formed in 2003, the Trio has performed throughout the United States, including appearances on the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s Beethoven Chamber Music Series, Oakmont Chamber Music Series,the Lane Concert Series at the University of Vermont, Central Texas Orchestral Society, Columbus Chamber Music series, as well as their debut appearance at Ravinia in September of 2008 and a tour on behalf of the Ravinia Festival celebrating the Lincoln Bicentennial, where they kicked off their year in Springfield at the official Abraham Lincoln Birthday Celebration with President Obama. In Chicago they are frequent guests of classical radio station WFMT and have been featured LIVE on WFMT's Impromptu, NEIU's Jewel Box Series with guest violist Roger Chase, the Fazioli Concert Series, Music in the Loft, Unity Temple, and the 28th Anniversary of the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series.
Champions of new music, the Lincoln Trio has performed numerous compositions written especially for them, including premieres of seven works by members of the Chicago Composers Consortium and "Moon Jig", by composer Augusta Read Thomas during her tenure as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's composer-in-residence. Staunch proponents of music education as well, the Lincoln Trio is also an ensemble-in-residence at the acclaimed Music Institute of Chicago.
This spring, Cedille Records will release a CD featuring the works of poet Billy Collins, on which the Lincoln Trio performs the world premiere of a new work by Stacy Garrop. The Trio's performance of Pierre Jalbert's Piano Trio for the September 2007 "Composers in the Loft" CD, also on Cedille, was praised by The Strad magazine: "The playing is sensational ... Pierre Jalbert’s Piano Trio (in two parts 'Life Cycle' and 'Agnus Dei') full of Schnittke-like sidling semitones is bewitching, with wonderful sneerings from the cello against insistently jaunty violin and piano, as if yearning to recall some elusive past." The recording was also complimented by the online music magazine, Enjoy the Music: "[Pierre Jalbert's] piece works well as "pure" music, constantly inventive and splendidly played by the Lincoln Trio."
In September 2008 the Lincoln Trio received top prize in the Masterplayers International Music Competition, Venice Italy.
As president and chief executive officer of Ravinia Festival, Welz Kauffman is responsible for the administration, programming and fiscal well-being of North America's oldest music festival. Building on a three-decade career as an arts administrator for major organizations from coast to coast, Kauffman assumed the presidency of Ravinia in 2000 and quickly established himself as an innovator.
The son of educators, Welz Kauffman began his own music career as a piano teacher and expanded his educational vista at J. Paul Getty Trust and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra; the Atlanta Symphony where he collaborated with the legendary Robert Shaw and former President Jimmy Carter; and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra where he developed community programs with Bobby McFerrin. At Ravinia more than 75,000 Chicago‐region residents benefit from services brought to the community under the “REACH. TEACH. PLAY.” umbrella.
REACH: The flagship of Ravinia’s education and community partnership programs is “One Score, One Chicago,” which entices listeners of all levels of understanding of classical music to embrace a single masterwork each season, through concerts, school programs, resource guides and free full‐length downloads of the selected work.
TEACH: Working with the Chicago Public Schools, Ravinia has installed classroom programs, teacher training and artist residencies in grammar and high schools that did not have music programs of their own, and Kauffman has established the long‐term goal of reaching all K‐3 students in Cook and Lake counties. Ravinia also runs a free conservatory in Lawndale where students of all ages can study as individuals and as families.
PLAY: The lauded Jazz Mentor program gives performance opportunities to Chicago’s brightest young musicians who not only work one‐on‐one with professional musicians but then band together as an ensemble that performs throughout the region. Young professionals receive training at Ravinia’s mirror of the Tanglewood and Aspen schools, the internationally recognized Steans Institute for Young Artists, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2008. Emerging talents from around the world compete for the coveted slots in this program which allows them to study with the artists who frequent the festival—artists such as Barbara Cook, George Hearn, Dimitri Hvorostovsky, Thomas Quasthoff, Christoph Eschenbach and James Conlon—and to hone their performance skills before Ravinia’s discerning audiences. Steans Institute alumni include soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian, pianist Jeremy Denk, mezzo‐soprano Michelle DeYoung, violinist Pekka Kuusisto, pianist Elizabeth Joy Roe, baritone Stephen Salters and pianist Andrew von Oeyen.
Through the Illinois Arts Alliance’s Illinois Creates, Jury of the Orchestre symphonique de Montreal Standard Life Competition, the Illinois Lincoln Bicentennial Commission and CALI, Kauffman continues to work with other professional educators to ensure that Ravinia’s programs fit the educational needs of the Chicago region.
Dillon's music, in the words of American Record Guide, is "lovely...austere...vivid and impressive." His works are recorded by Albany Records, Channel Crossings and CRS, and published by American Composers Editions. He is currently working on commissions from the Emerson String Quartet, the Cassatt String Quartet, the Mansfield Symphony, the Boise Philharmonic, the Salt Lake City Symphony, the Daedalus String Quartet, the University of Utah and the Idyllwild Symphony Orchestra. Composer Lawrence Dillon has produced an extensive body of work, from brief solo pieces
to a full‐length opera. Although he lost 50% of his hearing in a
childhood illness, he began composing as soon as he started
piano lessons at the age of seven. In 1985, he became the
youngest composer to earn a doctorate at The Juilliard School,
and was shortly thereafter appointed to the Juilliard faculty.
Dillon is now Composer in Residence at the University of North
Carolina School of the Arts, where he has served as Music Director of the Contemporary Ensemble, Assistant Dean of Performance, and Dean of the School of Music. He was the Featured American Composer in the February 2006 issue of Chamber Music magazine.
