GREETINGS

January 2010

Jin LeeGreetings!

On behalf of the Keumsil Cultural Society, it is truly my pleasure to welcome everyone to the 2010 “Korean American Day” Cultural Celebration. This is the fourth year we are hosting this type of event. In commemorating “Korean American Day”, we seek to pay tribute to the first immigrants and the contributions they made to American society. Much of these elements grew directly from their Korean culture and traditions; thus, the committee found it appropriate to promote the understanding of its heritage. Not only does this pertain to all ethnic Korean-Americans in the U.S., but to anyone else interested in Korean-American relations. The program is an appropriate vehicle to increase cross-cultural understanding and further promote positive developments between diverse cultures.

Art has no boundaries and transcends all language. In this spirit of unity, I have invited students from Chung Ang University-Dance Department of the Art College, to perform some classic dances and ballet. This January, I was fortunate enough to collaborate with both the Skokie Public Library and Morton Grove Public Library to foster a festival of Korean culture that explores all the cultural and social aspects of Korea.

“Korean American Day” began on January 13th, 1903, when 102 Korean immigrants (56 men, 21 women and 25 children) arrived in Honolulu, Hawaii, on the S.S. Gaelic. They were the first members of what has now become a community of approximately two million people residing throughout the United States. Korean-Americans play a crucial role in maintaining the strength and vitality of the U.S.-Korean partnership between these two nations. In turn, it is they who have helped foster peace and stability in the Asian-Pacific region. This partnership does not only provide economic benefits for both parties – the U.S. and Korea – but also for the rest of the world. In honor of this tie, The Republic of Korea Marine Corps Veterans Association of Chicago will present a special flag ceremony.

As an association with a mission to promote cultural exchanges and mutual understanding between countries, the Keumsil Cultural Society has carried out its mission with both the American and Korean-American communities. The participation and interaction of Koreans and Korean-Americans in American society has increased substantially in recent years, largely coinciding with the growing diversity in American culture.

On behalf of the executive organizers, we extend our deepest appreciation for your support of “Korean American Day.” I offer my best wishes to all participating organizations, sponsors and all others in attendance.

Sincerely yours,

Jin Lee / Director
Keumsil Cultural Society
